Toraja Arabica Coffee
“Tondok Lepongan Bulan, Tana Matari Allo”
Since The 16th Century

Tondok Lepongan Bulan, Tana Matari Allo is a well-known name for the Toraja region on the southern island of Sulawesi. Apart from its rich traditional and well-known culture, it turns out that Toraja is also one of the largest coffee producers in Indonesia. With a high mountainous residential area, Toraja is included in the requirements for a fertile growing area for coffee cultivation in Indonesia, especially Arabica coffee.
Toraja coffee was first known in the 16th century, the coffee trade became a major milestone in saving the economy in South Sulawesi, and became an attraction for traders in Luwu, Bone, Sidenreng and Sawito.
This attraction made Toraja coffee plantations wider and more famous. The increasing attraction led to a monopoly war in the mid-18th century between Sidenreng and Sawitto traders.
After the struggle, the condition of the coffee plantations actually led to an increase in the number of coffee enthusiasts from year to year. This can be seen from the increase in Toraja coffee, which previously was only exported through the European and Javanese markets, now the market is starting to increase in foreign countries, namely America and Singapore. Since 1860, coffee products have played a significant role in international trade.

Typica Toraja
Apart from the suitability of the planting area, Toraja coffee is also increasingly known for its Typica variety as a coffee variety inherited from its ancestors. Typica is a type of bean that comes from a plant native to Africa and the first variety that is considered to be part of Toraja’s coffee wealth. Previously, this variety was a sensitive plant that had an unusual way of growing. However, the Toraja region has a suitable climate so that the Typica type is suitable and fertile for planting in the region.
